Learning About Vermont History at Fort Ticonderoga @FortTiconderoga #History #VTED @RESVT

On Friday, we went back in time as we explored Fort Ticonderoga.  It was amazing to stand where Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys stood and changed history.  Ask your child about what he/she saw and learned!

Sometimes You Have To Call In The Hackers #Hack #ProblemSolve

This year I got really strong cases to protect my iPads, which is awesome!  However, after we started getting very poor sound quality on our videos, we realized the cases were covering the built-in microphones. Luckily, I have my own personal hackers; so we fixed the problem for future recordings!  And students working on their videos, problem solved the situation beautifully!

A Mother For Choco: Paragraph Writing #KeikoKasza #ScarsToYourBeautiful

After reading A Mother For Choco, by Keiko Kasza, students wrote paragraphs about what they think the author's message is in this book.  Students reflected on the fact that there are many different kinds of families and that what we look like really isn't important.  Students also made connections to Alessia Cara's song, "Scars To Your Beautiful".  Students shared their writing and gave each other thoughtful feedback.  I am so proud of the incredible growth they have made as writers!

Learning About Vermont History #Vermont #History

Mrs. Vogel took time to tell us an incredible story about her grandmother!  She shared with us that her grandmother used to travel alone from Burlington to Hinesburg to give piano lessons.  It was 1906, so she traveled by horse and buggy.  One time it was very cold, so her parents heated a stone to keep her feet warm.  She was so cold that she took her boots off to put her feet directly on the warm stone.  Well, you can imagine that taking her boots off would only lead to more trouble.  The rest of the story you'll have to get from your child.  But I will tell you that it involved a cougar jumping into her lap and a runaway horse!

Here you can see her grandmother on her horse and buggy.

Mrs. Vogel shares the actual stone she used to warm her feet!

Mrs. Vogel became her grandmother as she told the exciting tale!

Here is the timeline that can help your child retell this amazing story!

Celebrating Every Part Of Ourselves: Part 2 @alessiacara #ScarsToYourBeautiful #Writing #Art

Students spent the morning creating unique portraits of themselves to sit beside their "beautiful" paragraphs. Students were so moved by Alessia Cara's words and video, they wanted to create a space where they could be reminded of her message.  The way they expressed themselves was moving and amazing.  I love seeing how unique and beautiful each illustration is!

Celebrating Every Part Of Ourselves @alessiacara #ScarsToYourBeautiful #Writing

We have been working on our paragraph writing skills.  Two weeks ago, scholars watched a video and wrote about the impact of climate change on a community in Alaska.  Last Friday, we focused on love and acceptance by watching and discussing Alessia Cara's music video for her song, "Scars To Your Beautiful".
Students then wrote paragraphs focused on the big idea in her song and backed it up with evidence. Writers used evidence from the song, people in the video and their own personal experiences.  Students then shared their thoughtful writing with each other.  Some scholars allowed me to record them so that I could share their writing with you!

After everyone shared, we decided that our words are so powerful we need to share them with the world. Students will create a mural with their words as a reminder to love and appreciate all that makes us, and the people around us, unique.  I can't wait to share it with you!

Link to "Scars To Your Beautiful" video: https://youtu.be/MWASeaYuHZo?t=2m3s
(If you watch this with your child from the start of Alessia's video, you may to choose to skip the scar images from 1:58-2:03 as I did when I shared this with the class.  This link starts after that moment.)

Bottle Caps For Wheelchairs #MakeADifference

The Beacon Light Grange in Richmond is collecting plastic bottle caps.  This includes plastic caps from bottled water, liquid detergents, milk jugs and prescription bottles.  Not only will we save these caps from landfills, they will be sent to a company who will provide wheelchairs for people in need in exchange for the caps.
A student has spearheaded collecting plastic caps in our classroom to support this program!  Please save your plastic caps and send them in!  Thank you for your support!

Beth Redford is a Nationwide Sensational Student Voice Finalist! @aasl @bethredford @RESVTlibrary #StudentVoice #VTED #TechED

Our AMAZING librarian, Beth Redford, has been nominated by the American Association of School Librarians for her empowerment of student voice through social media!  She is one of three finalists nationwide!!!  This is quite an honor!
Today we took time to reflect on what we love and appreciate about Mrs. Redford.  You can learn more about her honor by going to the following site:  http://knowledgequest.aasl.org/student-voice/
If you go to the very bottom of the page, you can also leave comments if you would like.  The comments will feed into the decision the judges make.

Here is what we had to say about Mrs. Redford:
I have the honor of working with Beth Redford every day.  She is a very passionate, supportive and knowledgeable librarian!  Everything she does and works toward is student centered.  She inspires students to share their voice with the world through their book trailers, capstone projects and special events, like interviewing beloved author Cece Bell for NPR.
Beth Redford goes out of her way to make sure she is supporting students and teachers, and sharing the great work they are doing.  Beth Redford is a gift and an inspiration to our local and global communities!

Here are just some of the wonderful things my fourth grade students have to say about their librarian, Beth Redford:

“Mrs. Redford greets all students with a bright hello when they enter the library!  I love her fun attitude when she’s teaching!  I really like doing capstone projects because we get to choose any topic we want.  She allows us to share what we’re passionate about!”
-Hazel

“I think that she’s a really good teacher!  I like that she’s funny!  I think that it’s really cool that we get to make book trailers and share what books we think are well written and swanky!”
-Ben

“I like how when we made book trailers, she helped us write out our storyline.  This work helped us share our passion for the books we love!   I like that she’s always happy!  When we talk when she’s talking, she just reminds us nicely and doesn’t get mad.”
-Finn

“Mrs. Redford is an AMAZING librarian.  She’s not only a librarian, she has a very creative mind!  That means that she has a creative way of thinking so she can do creative projects with us, such as, capstone projects.  Whenever I need help with the hard articles about dance history I’m reading, Mrs. Redford the fabulous superhero librarian, comes over to help me gather information!  She shows me that whenever I think something is hard, there will always be someone there to help me, like her!”
-Tessa

“I think Mrs. Redford is an AMAZING librarian because she lets us do the best projects, like capstones, that allow us to share our opinion on topics we’re really interested in.  Topics that we want all our people to know about!”
-Sawyer

“I think Mrs. Redford is a super creative librarian because she shares all of our work and posts them on her blog.  For example, ALL of our book trailers and book reviews go onto her blog.  She’s the best librarian EVER!!!”
-Sonya

“I think Mrs. Redford is the best because she has computers to help us find books on our own.  I find this very helpful because if they weren't there, I would not be able to find all the books I want to read.  I think that doing capstone projects is great because you’re also learning things when you’re teaching other people!”
-Brady

“Mrs. Redford does awesome activities that everybody loves, such as the capstone projects.  She lets you pick your topic.  She puts our projects online so we can share our awesomeness and work with the whole wide world!”
-Leo

“I think that Mrs. Redford is AWESOME because she has SOOOOOO MANY books!  I can never find the right book in other libraries, but in her library, I can always find the perfect book!  She lets us do book trailers that allows us to share our feelings about our favorite books!”
-Andrew

Learning About Social Issues @Malala @MalalaFund @IqbalMasihFilm #SocialIssues

Liam brought in a wonderful book, by Jeanette Winter, that tells the stories of Iqbal Masih and Malala Yousafzai.  After reading this book, we are reminded of how lucky we are and of the many injustices of the world.
Students took time to ponder and discuss the effects of child slavery and girls being denied an education. Ask your children about what they learned!

Here are two videos that we watched and discussed:
