Whitney Gardner Is The BEST!!! Students Are Working Hard To Create & Finish More Book Reviews & Book Trailers! @HeyWhitney @resvt @WeVideo #FakeBlood #READ

The author of Fake Blood, Whitney Gardner, is inspiring us to keep sharing the books we love!!!

Kids should continue to read every day over vacation.  They can also work on their book trailers and reviews!  Kids use their school email and Chromebook password to access their WeVideo account.  Directions on how to make a trailer or review are in Google Classroom, as are helpful links.  Just like WeVideo, they access Google Classroom by typing in their school email and password.
We are so lucky that so many authors are watching our work and reaching out to us!  It is so inspiring!  We can't wait to dive into our next book and then share it with the world!!!

We LOVED Meeting Alex Gino And Learning About Why Writing Diverse Books Is So Important! @lxgino @resvt @Scholastic #Read #George

We had the honor of meeting author Alex Gino this week!  They told us about the thought & hard work that goes into writing a book; it took them twelve years to write George/Melissa's Story!  They also talked about the importance of creating mirrors for children, that every child should be able to find characters like them in the books they read.  Our fourth graders did such an incredible job of asking thoughtful questions.  We felt so lucky to spend the afternoon with a favorite author! Alex was truly inspiring!!!

NEW & IMPROVED VIDEO! Visiting Our First Grade Friends For Math & A LIttle Lesson In American Sign Language! @Hackettb @resvt @Inv3_Math #ASL #Community

We asked Mrs. Hackett if we could come measure her students.  We know that they use American Sign Language in their classroom also, so we asked if they could teach us how to count to 20 in ASL! We had so much fun spending our math class with these incredible first graders!  We learned so much!

Learning How To Make Films With WeVideo! @resvt @WeVideo #TechEd #VTED

Kids can make movies at home ANYTIME they want! They have WeVideo accounts!
They go to the WeVideo site: https://www.wevideo.com/sign-in
They login using Google.  They will put in their school email addresses:
Their password is the same password they use to get into their Chromebooks, email, Drive, Google Classroom, etc.

Today we learned how to take pictures & videos on an Ipad or iPod and upload that footage to our Drive.  Here are the directions kids follow if they want to do this at home.  These directions also show them how to share footage with friends.

Here are the directions kids follow to upload footage to their WeVideo account.  They can use their videos and photos in their films!

Kids had fun exploring WeVideo yesterday!  Today we worked on taking footage and learning how to upload it to Drive, then WeVideo.  Soon kids will feel more comfortable exploring, making mistakes, problem solving and finding their way as they use technology to share their learning!

I also added these directions to Google Classroom, so kids can access them easily all year long!  Encourage your kids to have fun exploring WeVideo & making films!

Poetry in Motion: Finding Inspiration Through Music & Art @resvt #VTED #CREATE #Poetry #Write #Mindfulness

Our colorful art and poems line the hallway.  The art and poetry came from a mindfulness exercise that we did.  We listened to music.  We illustrated what we heard, felt & saw in our imaginations.  Sometimes we closed our eyes to better connect with the music, and just let our art flow from our bodies.

When the music stopped, we walked around and described each other's art using deliciously descriptive words.  Then we used the inspiration from our art, and the words before us, to write poems!  What we ended up with was pure magic!  We can't wait to do this mindfulness exercise again!

I can't wait to see all of you at Open House tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 25th!  Make sure to check out their wonderful art and poetry!

Learning Sentence Structure In Word Study! @resvt #FramingYourThoughts #SchoolHouseRock

In word study, we reviewed how to write a complete sentence.  As writers, we know that it is important to understand sentence structure.  We had fun writing barebones sentences with just a subject/noun & predicate/verb, like:

Mason runs!
and
Dogs bark.

We then watched and discussed this video to solidify our thinking!

Ask your child how to write a barebones sentence!
We can't wait to learn more about our language and use our knowledge to edit our work!

Another great video:

Taking A Chance At The "Bus Stop"! Building Confidence & Community Through Improv! @resvt #Drama #Community #Improv #Trust

Last week for Fabulously Fun Friday, we played an improv game called "Bus Stop".  The afternoon was devoted to building confidence and community while nurturing creativity!  It is so important for kids to learn how to find the inner strength they need to stand up and speak in front of their peers!  We also had a lot of fun!  We can't wait to "play" together again!

Check out your awesome thespians! I wish you could watch it live! They are creative and hilarious!

Is Your Life Too Plastic? How Can We Take Better Care Of Each Other & The World? @resvt @BagItMovie @TeachSDGs #Environment

We have been learning about the importance of recycling and taking care of ourselves and the environment.  Today we watched this video and discussed ways we can make small changes that have a big impact!  For example, asking for paper bags instead of plastic, or better yet, bringing our own bags when we shop!  We also loved the advice of getting our ice cream in a cone instead of a cup!  Talk with your child about changes you can make each day that help our earth, the animals, and ourselves!

Fake It 'Til You BECOME It! Tiny Tweaks Can Make BIG CHANGES In Our Lives! @resvt @amyjccuddy @TEDTalks #PowerPose #Confidence

Today we learned that how we hold our body impacts not only how others feel about us, it affects how we feel about ourselves.  We learned that when we sit up straight and stand tall, we are more confident, and therefore, more successful!  We understand that we don't have to "fake it 'til we make it", we can "fake it 'til we BECOME it"!  We can become the person we want to be!  We learned that small changes in how we hold our bodies, can have a huge impact on our lives!
You can watch the video on your own or with your child, and support each other in feeling more confident.  Because it is a long video, we skipped parts & talked about what she did and learned.  This is a wonderful video to continue to discuss and think more deeply about.
We will do "Power Poses" all year, especially before we take tests or when we feel nervous about a task.  I encourage you to try them out and see how you feel!

You can watch the entire video, or you can skip these parts to make it shorter, but still get the message.
*Stop at 11:08
*Start at 12:14
(*Stop at 13:19 can watch or talk about the stressful interview they are put through)

Math Is About Thinking Deeply, Taking Our Time, Making Mistakes, And Finding Relationships And Patterns! @joboaler @resvt #Math #GrowthMindset

Today we discussed that math IS NOT about memorization and speed, it's about perseverance and believing in ourselves!  Please watch this video that we looked at today, and discuss it with your child.  it will help you understand why our focus in math today is less about memorizing algorithms and more about understanding, seeing patterns, and finding multiple ways to approach a given problem.  In math, and in everything, we celebrate when we make mistakes because it means we're learning!
Talk with your children and remind them that they can do ANYTHING they set their minds to!  ❤

Today, we had the honor of meeting a medevac team from our Vermont Army National Guard, some of whom live right here in Richmond!  They let us ask questions, push buttons & get a glimpse of what it's like to fly a Black Hawk helicopter & save lives!  They were very kind and patient; they took time to teach us about their important work, & about helicopters.  We are deeply grateful they came to visit.  We thank them for their service, and for making our day so special!!!
