The RES Quest: Songwriting With Jon Gailmor #JonGailmor #PBIS @RESVT @RESPEVT
On Monday, fourth graders had the honor of working with Jon Gailmor. Jon Gailmor is a talented songwriter, singer and educator. We invited Jon Gailmor to RES to help us write a new school song! Fourth graders focused on our core beliefs: Respect Yourself, Respect Others and Respect Your Environment. They thought about how these words that we live by make Richmond Elementary School such an incredible community and place to be.

Celebrating Every Part Of Ourselves: Part 2 @alessiacara #ScarsToYourBeautiful #Writing #Art
Students spent the morning creating unique portraits of themselves to sit beside their "beautiful" paragraphs. Students were so moved by Alessia Cara's words and video, they wanted to create a space where they could be reminded of her message. The way they expressed themselves was moving and amazing. I love seeing how unique and beautiful each illustration is!

Celebrating Every Part Of Ourselves @alessiacara #ScarsToYourBeautiful #Writing
We have been working on our paragraph writing skills. Two weeks ago, scholars watched a video and wrote about the impact of climate change on a community in Alaska. Last Friday, we focused on love and acceptance by watching and discussing Alessia Cara's music video for her song, "Scars To Your Beautiful".
Students then wrote paragraphs focused on the big idea in her song and backed it up with evidence. Writers used evidence from the song, people in the video and their own personal experiences. Students then shared their thoughtful writing with each other. Some scholars allowed me to record them so that I could share their writing with you!
After everyone shared, we decided that our words are so powerful we need to share them with the world. Students will create a mural with their words as a reminder to love and appreciate all that makes us, and the people around us, unique. I can't wait to share it with you!

(If you watch this with your child from the start of Alessia's video, you may to choose to skip the scar images from 1:58-2:03 as I did when I shared this with the class. This link starts after that moment.)

Bottle Caps For Wheelchairs #MakeADifference
The Beacon Light Grange in Richmond is collecting plastic bottle caps. This includes plastic caps from bottled water, liquid detergents, milk jugs and prescription bottles. Not only will we save these caps from landfills, they will be sent to a company who will provide wheelchairs for people in need in exchange for the caps.
A student has spearheaded collecting plastic caps in our classroom to support this program! Please save your plastic caps and send them in! Thank you for your support!
