We take time to practice mindfulness every day. Sometimes we focus on gratitude. One day we reflected on the message of gratitude in this song. A student asked if we could make a mural of a gratitude tree, so we did!
Inspired by Women's History Month & Black History Month, we learned about black artists, including Faith Ringgold. Faith Ringgold uses her art and children's books to teach people about black history, and to create windows and mirrors for people. Her grandmother was an artist. When she was little and saw her grandmother's beautiful artwork, she pointed to the painting and said her first word, "Dah" in amazement. Her grandmother inspired her to become an artist. She created a series of "Dah" paintings to honor her grandmother. We used her Dah paintings of gratitude to inspire our sky mural to sit behind our tree of gratitude. Students chose the colors for the sky, and chose to mix paint and paper to make their mural, just like Faith Ringgold likes to mix different mediums.
We had so much fun making our sky mural!
During mindfulness, students then cut out hearts and wrote down things they are grateful for. We then made our tree and hung our messages of gratitude onto our tree. We appreciate the way this special mural fills our space with love, joy, and gratitude!
